AI Funding for Canadian Small Businesses: What's Actually Open (September 2026)
By Udaay Sikder
Last checked: September 2026. Programs change; we update this guide monthly and date every claim.
If you run a small or mid-size business in Canada and you've searched for AI grants in Canada or government funding for AI adoption, you have almost certainly been pointed to a program that no longer exists. This guide is the corrected map: what is dead, what is actually open today, what is in between — and what to do if, like most small businesses, you qualify for less than the headlines suggest.
The program everyone still recommends — CDAP — is closed
The Canada Digital Adoption Program (CDAP) — the $15,000 Boost Your Business Technology grant — closed to new applications in early 2024 after being fully subscribed, and it has not reopened. Yet articles, advisors, and even AI assistants still recommend it in 2026. We've written before about how AI assistants answer business questions — stale sources produce exactly this kind of error. If a guide leads with CDAP, it is out of date, and so is everything else it tells you.
What actually happened next: in June 2026 the federal government launched a national AI strategy with multi-billion-dollar backing, and the money for businesses now flows through different doors. Here are the ones that are open.
AI funding programs open right now (checked September 2026)
NRC IRAP — the one to call first. The Industrial Research Assistance Program is active, funded, and unusual in the best way: it starts with a phone call (1-877-994-4727), not a form. You're assigned an Industrial Technology Advisor who works through eligibility and scope with you. Reported first-time contributions typically run $75,000–$200,000, and IRAP support can cover a substantial share of eligible project costs. If your AI project involves any real technical development or integration work, this is the first conversation to have. Manufacturers get the deeper version, including what qualifies and what does not, in our IRAP guide for manufacturers.
BDC LIFT — open since April 2026, with two catches. LIFT finances AI adoption — software, integration, training — with loans reported from $25,000 up to $5 million, paired with an AI advisor. The two things most write-ups skip: first, it is financing, not a grant — the money is repaid. Second, eligibility starts at $1 million in annual revenue, which excludes many small businesses, and there is a Canadian-supplier lean on tools purchased with the funds. Read the current terms with your BDC contact before building a plan around it.
Scale AI Acceleration Program. Up to $50,000 non-repayable for early-stage companies building applied AI, accessed through Scale AI-certified accelerator partners rather than direct application. Relevant if you're building an AI product, less so if you're adopting AI into an ordinary business.
SR&ED tax credits — the evergreen one. If your AI work involves experimentation and technical uncertainty (not just buying a subscription), Canada's Scientific Research & Experimental Development credits remain among the most generous in the world. Talk to your accountant before, not after, the project.
Provincial and regional programs worth checking by location: Innovate BC's Ignite program (up to $300,000 for commercialization) for BC technology companies; ACOA's innovation contributions (reported up to $500,000) in Atlantic Canada; and municipal digital-adoption grants in Toronto, Ottawa, and Waterloo typically in the $5,000–$50,000 range. Each has its own intake rhythm — check the official page the week you intend to apply.
Announced or between intakes: the Regional AI Initiative and the AI Compute Access Fund
The June 2026 strategy directed roughly $500 million through the Regional AI Initiative via Canada's regional development agencies — but the doors open unevenly. PrairiesCan's stream accepts continuous applications through 2028, though it targets deployment-ready AI solutions rather than first adoption. PacifiCan (BC) was not accepting applications at our last check. FedDev Ontario's expanded program details are still rolling out. The AI Compute Access Fund — $300 million to help SMEs afford AI compute — has been between intakes. For all four: the practical move is having a documented AI roadmap ready so you can apply the week an intake opens, instead of starting from zero.
What to do if you qualify for none of it
Here is the honest part most funding guides omit: if your business is under $1 million in revenue and your AI project is adoption rather than R&D, today's open programs offer you little. That is most Canadian small businesses. Two implications:
First, the project math has to work without a grant. Any AI investment worth making should recover its cost from your own operations — fewer hours on quoting, intake, scheduling, paperwork (the work AI automation exists to absorb) — on a timeline you can verify. If it only makes sense with subsidy, it doesn't make sense.
Second, when a program does open — and several will over the coming year — the businesses that win are the ones holding a documented, quantified AI roadmap. That document is precisely what an AI opportunity audit produces: where AI pays in your operation, what it costs, what it returns, in numbers you can hand to an advisor or an application form. If you want to see what that looks like in practice, we published a worked example of an AI opportunity audit.

Frequently asked questions
Is CDAP still available in 2026?
No. The Boost Your Business Technology grant closed to new applications in early 2024 after being fully subscribed and has not reopened. Guides still recommending it are out of date.
What replaced CDAP for small businesses?
No single program. The closest current paths are NRC IRAP (advisor-led contributions, open now), BDC LIFT (AI adoption financing for businesses over $1M revenue, open since April 2026), and regional development agency programs that are opening unevenly through 2026–2027.
Is BDC LIFT a grant?
No — LIFT is financing paired with advisory support. The money is repaid. It also carries a revenue threshold and supplier conditions; read the current terms before planning around it.
Can funding cover work with a non-Canadian consultant or vendor?
It depends on the program. LIFT in particular leans toward Canadian suppliers for funded purchases. IRAP funds your project costs under an advisor-approved scope. If cross-border work matters to your plan, raise it explicitly with the program advisor before committing.
What's the single best first step?
Call IRAP (1-877-994-4727) if your project has technical depth, and get your AI roadmap documented either way — every program that opens will ask for it.
