Custom Software Development Cost in 2026: Survey Data and Published Prices
By Samia Zaman
Every page that ranks for "custom software development cost" is written by an agency, and almost none of them tells you what that agency charges. They give a range from $10,000 to $500,000 and a form. This post does two things differently. It uses survey data instead of vendor estimates, and it tells you our own prices, because they are already published.
The short answer. In 2026 survey data, two thirds of custom software projects at small and mid sized firms land between $30,000 and $100,000 and take three to six months. Our scoped builds are priced at $15,000 to $45,000 with a 75 day delivery guarantee, which sits at the lower half of that band because we scope to one job and ship a first version early. What moves any project up or down is scope, integrations, data, and compliance, in that order.
What the surveys say, not the sales pages
GoodFirms 2026 survey (more than 100 development firms, surveyed late 2025, updated September 2026): 14.1 percent of projects are small or MVP builds under $30,000 taking one to three months; 65.7 percent are medium projects at $30,000 to $100,000 over three to six months; 14.1 percent are $100,000 to $200,000; 6.3 percent are enterprise builds over $200,000. Two thirds of firms said scope creep adds 10 to 25 percent, and firms budget 10 to 20 percent a year for maintenance. The same survey put a small business website at $3,000 to $15,000 for half of respondents.
Clutch pricing guide (updated September 2026): average project $132,480 over about 13 months, but the most common range is $10,000 to $49,999, which tells you the average is pulled up by a few large projects. Most firms on Clutch charge $25 to $49 an hour; US firms cluster at $50 to $99 and Canadian firms at $100 to $149.
Techreviewer 2026 rate study (127 providers): 37.8 percent of firms charge $30 to $49 an hour, 22 percent charge $50 to $99, and under 10 percent charge over $100.
Arc freelancer survey (5,302 developers, May 2026): US and Canadian freelancers $82 to $130 an hour, Eastern Europe $40 to $85, South Asia $22 to $55.
The pattern: hourly rates vary five fold by geography, but project totals vary far less, because a cheaper hourly rate usually buys more hours. The number that matters is the fixed price for a defined scope, and almost nobody publishes one.
Our prices, published
We publish them on the pricing page and we do not quote above them.
- Software development: $15,000 to $45,000 typical for a scoped build. A web app, an internal tool, a SaaS first version, a desktop app, or a browser extension.
- AI automation build: from $7,500, typically $10,000 to $18,000.
- Web development: from $6,000, typically $8,000 to $14,000.
- Guarantee: scoped automation and software builds go live in 75 days or your money back.
- Entry: a free 30 minute scan, then an AI Opportunity Audit at $2,500 credited in full toward the build within 90 days.
The $15,000 floor is where a real, production grade single job build starts when it is done by people who will also run it. The $45,000 ceiling is where a project stops being one job and becomes two, and we would rather scope two builds than quote one vague one.
What moves the number
Scope, first and by a long way. A build that does one job (quote intake, scheduling, a customer portal) costs a fraction of one that does three. The GoodFirms finding that scope creep adds 10 to 25 percent understates it; in our experience an unscoped "and also" at week six is the single biggest cause of a project leaving its band.
Integrations. Each external system (accounting, CRM, payment, EVV aggregator, ERP) adds authentication, error handling, and a test setup. One well documented API is a few days. A legacy system with no API is a project of its own.
Data. Migrating from spreadsheets or an old database, cleaning it, and deciding what to do with the exceptions is work people forget to budget. If the data is clean, this is small. If it is not, it can be a third of the project.
Compliance. HIPAA, PDPL, PIPEDA, Medicaid documentation rules, SOC 2 expectations from an enterprise customer. Each adds requirements to the data model, logging, and access controls. Cheap to design in, expensive to retrofit.
Who runs it afterwards. A build you will operate yourself needs admin screens, monitoring, and documentation. A build we operate under a retainer (from $1,800 a month on our pricing page) can skip some of that.
Geography of the team, less than you think. The hourly rate changes; the total changes less. What geography reliably changes is time zone overlap and how many rounds of clarification a feature takes.
Three builds at three price points
These are composites of the kind of work in our range, not client names.
$15,000 to $20,000: an intake and quoting tool for a job shop. Web form, parts list, pricing rules from their spreadsheet, PDF quote, email to the customer, log of every quote. One integration (their accounting system). Six to eight weeks.
$25,000 to $35,000: a customer portal for a service business. Login, booking, documents, invoices, messaging, admin dashboard. Two integrations (payments and calendar). Role based access. Ten to twelve weeks.
$40,000 to $45,000: a SaaS first version. Multi tenant accounts, billing, the core workflow, background jobs, a public landing page, and the admin tools to support early customers. This is the shape of our own product, Crawlmouse, a live website auditing SaaS we built and run, and the closest thing to a reference you can check.
How to get a real number instead of a range
Write down the one job the software must do on day one. List every system it must talk to. Say who will run it. Say which regulations touch the data. With those four answers, any competent firm can give you a fixed price, and if it will not, that tells you something. We give ours after a free 30 minute scan, inside the published range, before any work starts.

Frequently asked questions
How much does custom software development cost in 2026?
Survey data puts two thirds of small and mid market projects at $30,000 to $100,000 over three to six months (GoodFirms 2026). Clutch's most common range is $10,000 to $49,999. Our published range for a scoped build is $15,000 to $45,000.
How much does it cost to build a web app?
A single job web app with one integration typically costs $15,000 to $25,000 from us. Vendor guides quote $10,000 to $250,000 depending on complexity; the wide range is why a fixed price for a defined scope matters more than the hourly rate.
How much does a SaaS MVP cost?
Survey backed figures put small MVP builds under $30,000 and most first versions at $30,000 to $100,000. Our SaaS first version builds sit at $40,000 to $45,000 with a 75 day delivery guarantee.
Why do hourly rates vary so much but project prices less?
Because a lower hourly rate usually buys more hours of clarification, rework, and management. Geography changes the rate card; scope changes the total.
Do you publish your software development prices?
Yes. $15,000 to $45,000 for scoped software builds, from $7,500 for AI automation builds, from $6,000 for web development, with a 75 day guarantee on scoped builds, all on our pricing page.
